Abstract:

The prevalence of overweight and obesity were measured in a sample of 912 children aged 6 to 12 year in an urban area of the Eastern part of Algeria. .  The references used are those of the IOTF.  The prevalence of overweight and obesity is 23.10% (24% in the girls and 23.80% among boys).  The overweight alone is found in 18.64 % and obesity in 5.26% of the children.  Obesity is more frequent in the families on high socio-economic level, it also higher when the educational level of the parents is high.  Obese children are more numerous not to have a breakfast, and to consume biscuit than that normal weight child and eat more often high fat, high carbohydrates foods. The total caloric intakes of the two groups are very close.   The percent of energy derived from the lipids is similar. Most of the children (84 %) do not practise any regular physical activity.  The energy contributions are positively correlated at time spent to play outside and the level of physical activity and negatively correlated at the length of trip at the school.  In weekend the normal weight children spend more time playing outside than to look at television.  This second study shows that the overweight and obesity became a problem of public health threat in Algeria.
